Raising The Alarm on DM Twitter Scams

If you receive an unsolicited DM from a mutual claiming that they need YOUR help, then it’s time to get cautious.  A scam is going around where a compromised account received the same message that you did, and they sent over information that led to their account being taken over.

That account then sent hundreds of DMs to all of their mutual followers, and you just happened to be on that list.

You will get a message that your mutual accidentally reported you.  On that message, they will send a screenshot of an alleged support ticket.

The ticket instructs you to reach out to somebody on Discord for help to “resolve the report” so that you don’t get banned.

There was no report.  You can’t even report for the violation cited in the screenshot.  Twitter Personnel are not permitted to do any support work offsite.  Their support people work internally, which means that they have a policy to avoid talking to you unless necessary to you.  All Twitter support personnel are PROHIBITED from opening accounts on mass chat platforms such as Discord by company policy.

You are already safe.  This is an attempt to intimidate you so that the scammer can illicit a panic response.  Do not panic, because nothing has happened to you or your account.

Ignore the message.  Block the account.  Report the account.  Alert anybody that you know who also follows this person.

There is no need to engage with the scammer.  “Telling them off” wastes your time.  There is nothing that this low-life hasn’t heard before.  This is their day job.  They get paid to do this, and they have done it hundreds or thousands of times.

This goes for ALL suspicious messages and scams. 

If you’re at the point where the scammer wants you to click a link or give some information, DO NOT DO IT.  You are very far into the scam already.  Any action which you take after this can risk your account and the security of your devices.

It is not advised for you to waste any of the scammer’s time.  Anything you do to do so just gives them more time to be paid for.

Give them nothing, and make them move on.  Warn everybody you know who could be affected.
